The Resurrection Plant

My Gram bought me a Resurrection Plant a few months ago. I put the box on top of my fridge and completely forgot to "plant" it, until last night.

In one bag are rocks, the other bag is the plant. Wash off out the bowl, rinse off the rocks, wet the plant and then put the rocks and plant in the bowl. Fill the bowl with water and then it looks like this.

An hour later it started to bloom. I woke up this morning and it looked like this.

Everyday, for a week, the plant needs to be rinsed as well as the rocks and new water needs to be added to the bowl. From there, I can either allow the plant to dry out, or I can keep it moist. She claims I won't be able to kill this plant. I have my fingers crossed.

Summer, Where Are You?

All I want to do this summer is drink beers on a roof. I'd like to be able to see the city skyline from whichever roof I end up on, but it's not a necessity. While having dinner with Amanda on Tuesday, she told me that she has roof access and can make my summertime dreams come true. I took some time away from my very busy work schedule today, to come up with some new goals.

Lay a blanket on the grass and sip a Slurpee.
Take sunrise photographs while standing barefoot on the beach.
Meet good people and make friends with them.
Spend less time interneting and more time outside.
Consume hundreds of soft serve ice cream cones.
Drink on my stoop even though I live in Fishtown.
Dance enough to break a sweat.
Dip corn dogs in ketchup and then eat them. Finish one and repeat.
Have my shoes off whenever possible.

Maybe I Should Buy a Bike

It took me an hour and a half to get home from work tonight.

Police activity at Somerset station caused delays. Then a fire at Girard caused major delays. I got to 15th Street and saw this. Commuters packed on the platform, waiting for the 69th Street El. On my side, a train sitting quietly on the tracks.

Once on the train, we crawled from station to station. Not a word from the conductor as to why things were moving so slowly. After leaving 2nd Street, we arrived at Spring Garden. From the conductor, we finally hear, "Listen up, listen up, listen up passengers! Due to a situation at Girard, Spring Garden will be our last stop. There will be shuttle buses waiting for you when we get to Spring Garden." He never mentioned where the shuttle buses would be taking us. He also didn't take into consideration that the 5 bus, which departs from 2nd Street, is also headed towards the Frankford Transportation Center.

Once at Spring Garden, I found myself in the middle of this:

Everyone attempting to exit Spring Garden, meanwhile this station only has one turnstile. It was then that I decided to get back on the West bound train, in hopes of catching the 6:38pm 5 bus. We arrived back at 2nd Street at 6:33pm. This gave me enough time to make it up the stairs to catch my bus. I stood at 2nd Street until 7:05pm. This is when I gave up on SEPTA and called a friend for a ride home.

I understand that things happen. All I'm asking for it better communication between SEPTA and it's commuters. Have announcements at each station, letting passengers know about the delay and the shuttle buses. Don't wait until we're pulling into the last stop to tell us that it's going to be the last stop. Give us time to prepare, time to figure out another way home. Please.

It took me an hour to get home from work tonight.

It usually takes about 15-20 minutes. I sat patiently on the train at 2nd street from 6:19 to 6:34pm. I watched two trains pass on the opposite tracks. I heard the conductor, zero times. Finally, I got off the train and took the 6:38pm bus home.

I pay $20.75 every week so that I can get to and from a job that makes me miserable. Handing over that money, knowing that delays will make me late to work, is infuriating. I don't want to give you my money. I could get a bike, but I'm fat and lazy and frankly I'm scared that I'm going to get hit by a cab that would rather leave me for dead than help peel me off the ground. So, I ride Septa. It always seemed like the better choice, now I'm not so sure.

This 'operating on a single track' bullshit is getting old. Take my $20.75 along with the money from the other commuters and fix it already. I see the men in the neon jackets walking around with their hardhats and walkie-talkies. But, I also see people standing on platforms shoulder to shoulder because they've been waiting for a half hour to board a train.

I'm not going to complain about the smell, the cleanliness, the deafening volume on most trains, the rats, the human feces, the dangerous bus drivers, the unsalted platforms after a snowstorm, the broken elevators, the filthy escalators or even the poor attitudes from 97% of the employees. I'm just pissed that I've had to see this, several times over the last few weeks:

IKEA, My Sweet Valentine

A simple meal. The same each time. For Julia, french fries and mac & cheese. For myself, Swedish meatballs and mac & cheese. I should learn to tell the cashier that I'll be drinking water, instead of answering soda like a fool! I have three complaints about our trip to Conshohocken.

The seats were awful. They had arms that tricked me each time I tried to stand up. My thigh would get hooked and I would be stuck in a squat until my brain realized that I was trapped.
Our table was busted. Actually, that was quite funny.
There's never space for your dirty tray. That's at every IKEA I've ever been to.

Strangers. I'd like to dedicate more of my time into photographing them.
I'm so nervous that someone's going to try and punch me in the face.

Speed Hating

I went Speed Hating Saturday night and I think it's safe to say that this year was the best Valentine’s Day I have ever, ever had. My good friend Kay Marie invited me to the event, seeing as how I’m the only single friend she’s got left. So, last night I tore myself away from MTV’s True Life marathon, pried myself off the couch and got ready.

At around 7pm, I arrived to a lonely Kay Marie, sitting in an almost empty bar. Once I took my coat off and ordered two $.25 draft beers from the special, people started to filter in. The bartender/bar back was cute and I spotted one or two fairly decent looking guys in the crowd. However, I noticed that everyone that looked at me had a face of disappointment. So, I drank more. We filled out our nametags, headed towards the back of the bar and found seats. We decided to sit in seats that faced each other, but were at separate tables. My friend Julia arrived minutes before the event began, and had just enough time to fill out a nametag and steal a seat behind me.

And, so it began.

I don’t remember the first person I sat with. He was short. I drank a lot while I was sitting with him and he walked away pretty disgusted. I only remember his shortness. I intentionally didn’t take notes about him.

Next was Chandler Quintin. I know this because he wrote his full name for me, and signed it with a heart. He’s 21, from Boston and he has an adorable baby face. He tried to tell me that he was on MTV, he even gave me a link: www.college500.mtvu.com – Red Team! I haven’t verified that it’s real. I added him on Facebook though!

Then there was Steve. He’s 24, from New Jersey. He’s a history teacher for the criminally insane. We exchanged numbers after Speed Hating. He gave me this myspace link, but it took me to a black woman’s page. I don’t think it’s him.

Steve and I shared numerous high fives and laughed a lot, mostly at other people. We were supposed to meet up at another bar last night, but he got high and couldn’t make it.

I think I sat with Matt next. He’s 25 and was wearing a striped shirt. He had a pretty crazy scar on his neck, so I asked him about it. He explained that he had thought up 2 fake stories to tell everyone. One story blamed the scar on a shark attack, the other explained that is was the result of a drug deal gone bad. What really happened though, was that he was in a motorcycle accident. "It pays the bills though." He also sold the bike, which is a good thing because I think those bikes are gay.

I found out today that his last name is Hamilton. We’re now Facebook friends.

Then Gary sat with me. Gary was so old; he could have been my Father. When I explained that my Dad was turning 57 this month, Gary agreed that he really was old enough to be my Dad. He’s originally from Germantown, I think, but now lives in Bucks County… with his parents. He works at a college, doing Tech Support, "You know, changing light bulbs and stuff." It seemed like I was sitting with Gary for an eternity, but when Julia told me that he sat with her for 2 rounds, I didn’t have much to complain about.

Then there was Ryan. He’s 27 and just moved back to Pennsylvania from Baltimore because his sister had a baby. We spent most of our 3-minute date making fun of Gary. He was really sweet. I don’t remember what he looks like.

Mike came to sit with me next. He is 22 and from Sydney, Australia. I picked up on his accent right away. He was impressed that I knew where he was from, since he had only spoke a few words. He’s traveling, though I don’t remember where he’s been. I do know that he leaves for New York soon. He gave me his e-mail address. Now you have it too.

He won the prize at the end of the night, along with Kay Marie. It was a $25 gift card to the bar that was hosting the event.

Mike was after Mike. Sigh. He’s 23. He was anti-Valentine’s Day, but aren’t we all? He explained how excited he was that someone thought to have a singles event on this awful 'holiday'. I realized he was right. He asked me what I hated about dating and I explained that I hate it because you never know what’s going to happen. I told him about the date I basically took myself on. I ended up paying for my half of everything we did, and the guy fell asleep at the movie he chose for us to see. I liked Mike. I don’t remember what he looks like either.

Sleazy Mark, 23 from New York joined me next. He moved down here and now works either in the Comcast Center or for Comcast. I can’t remember which one he said. He did tell me that he could get me a deal on my Comcast bill. Each speed date was supposed to last 3 minutes. My date with Sleazy Mark felt like it lasted 30 seconds. I’m not complaining.

Corey sat with me after Sleazy Mark. He was wearing a nametag that read Crystal. I ripped it off and kept it, see?

He’s 22 and from New York. He was one of the cute ones I spotted at the beginning of the night. I told him that too. I don’t even think he was sitting with me for a whole minute before 'Turquoise' came and took Corey away from me. I think it was his girlfriend.

Then came Tristan who is 22, from Wisconsin.
Then there was Erik who is 26 and from Radnor.

Next to sit with me was Gina. I have no idea how old Gina is. She was wearing a Christmas sweater. After complimenting her on it, she took off her shoes to show off her socks. I have written for her that she works for the bar where the event was taking place. I was also suspicious that she’s a possible lesbian, but I liked her. I hit her eye with the side of my glasses when she came to my side of the table to take a picture with me.

She gave me a heart candy that said 'Sunshine' and wrote 'VAGINA' on a blank heart. Towards the end of the night, she changed her sweater. I’d really like to see the pictures she took of us.

I sat with two other dudes, but I don’t remember their names. They live together near 7th and Locust, maybe? They took pictures with me too. I also met Anna Belle, who was wearing a tie and sitting at a table alone. I don’t remember if I sat with anyone else, because these index cards were all I found in my clutch.

Once the Speed Hating was over, the music got louder and everyone started to mingle. I gave a lot of high fives, used gross bathrooms, drank even more and regrettably ate heart candies. Each time I ate one, it tasted disgusting and I spit it out.

After 9 beers, I asked Leia, one of the waitresses who happened to be Kay’s friend, if she would ask the cute bartender/bar back to come talk to me. A few minutes later and he was standing behind me, talking to the DJ. I remember hugging him, handing him a piece of paper with my number on it and hugging him again. I think his name was Michael. It’d be nice if he called.

My advice is, if there’s ever a Speed Dating event with cheap drinks, go!

Pucker Up!

All I wanted was a toasted bagel with cream cheese and a possible chai tea with a splash of French vanilla. I wondered around Wawa. Checked out the milkshakes, did they go up in price? Smiled at the heart shaped donuts with pink and red sprinkles. Then, I found them. The perfect Valentine's Day idea for Yoshi; candy lips!

Not only did they taste awful, but the smell of the smell wasn't pleasant either. This didn't stop me from wearing them around the office though! On a break, Jackie and I walked to the Comcast Center. We took pictures with our new friend, Kareem Lamont Williams.

The 60 mile an hour winds didn't make for great outdoor photography, so we tried to snap a shot in the breakroom while no one was watching. We got caught.

I was wowed by the sign that showed Salad $3.99. The individual toppings, as cheap as $.40 were almost too good to be true. As a friend walked the length of the counter, pointing out what she wanted added to her salad bowl, I was eager to do that same.

Every topping in a separate container, looking fresher than Subway could ever be. I slowly walked along the counter, touch the glass and pointing to what I wanted.

Spinach leaves. Shredded cheese. Corn. Cucumber. No, no cucumbers. Tomatoes. Mushrooms. Chicken. Thousand Island. Except they didn't have any. Weird! Ranch dressing instead!

So beautiful. So delicious.

So EXPENSIVE. $.40 adds up, especially when the chicken cost $1.75! Total for my delicious meal? $8.50

Spinach was a bad choice. My mouth tasted like it was lined with fuzz afterward.

Cards, flowers, bears, candy, chocolate, balloons, telegrams, mixtapes, dinner, kisses, red, hearts, love, cupid, arrows, sweets, romance, Hallmark, roses...

I was at Walgreen's today and I walked down the Valentine's Day aisle. This is the "holiday" I dread. I've had one memorable boyfriend on Valentine's Day. I'm not including my first boyfriend in this count because that love was the infatuation you have before you fall into the kind of love that smashes your heart into a million pieces.

Two years ago, my boyfriend at the time wanted to surprise me with a lovely bouquet of flowers at work. He called ahead of time and had them delivered to the office address in Old City, Philadelphia. I remember this so vividly because Mother Nature was kind enough to blanket Philadelphia with a few inches of snow and ice the day before V-Day. I went to work that day in hopes of hearing a random UPS/Fed-Ex driver call my name out over the call center voices. This never happened though.

The receptionist at the other Old City location refused to sign the slip for the flowers and told the delivery person that they could find me, "around the corner". The flowers never arrived. Do you know how difficult it is to contact a representative at Flowers.com on Valentine's Day? Well because my boyfriend had band practice that night, I had to spend 4 hours on hold trying to get a refund for the undelivered bouquet.

Two years later and I'm still bitter about it.

Deep breath.

This year, I will not be looking for flowers, I will not be expecting chocolates and I definitely don't want to be kissed. I'll enjoy putting Valentine's Day cards at the desks of the coworkers who makes me smile. I might even make a mix to listen to while I cut out the heart shaped sugar cookies I plan on baking.

Flowers die eventually anyway.

My good friend Ryan was in town for a few days on business. It's becoming tradition that we take a road trip when he's in Philadelphia. Since he travels so often, the cost of a rental is usually around $2 because he just cashes in all of his... whatevers. I don't remember what he called them. Points? Maybe.

Last night, he rented us a 2008 Jetta. Since we work for the same company, I'm able to drive the car under the insurance. Or something like that. Either way, it makes life a lot easier since I don't have to shout directions and he doesn't have to dodge Center City cabs. For the record, I had to dodge 2 last night and 1 of them came really close to hitting us.

We decided to drive to KB Toys so that he could find some collectible cars that only KB Toy stores carry. Since they're going out of business, the cars are costing him $1.33 each. Since everything in the store was 60% off, I couldn't help but pick through the piles.

I found fart machines. Remote control fart machines for $9.99. Price at the register? $1.99 I wanted to buy the whole box. Ryan tried to discreetly aim the fart machine at a group of teenagers as we walked past them, but since it was still in it's case, it wasn't very loud. It was a hit in the office today though. Farts are funny.

We left and went to the Cheesecake Factory. The luxury of having a vehicle cannot be appreciated until you've had to rely on public transportation for a long period of time. A long period of time being at least one month. It was so lovely to drive up to King of Prussia, go on a hunt for collectible cars and return to my apartment safely.

I really miss the rental.

Even though the drivers seat was one of the most uncomfortable and unpleasant seats I have ever sat in. Even after several adjustments, my ass was just too wide for me.

Tonight, after having a drink with friends, I ventured home. I left Oscar's and walked to 13th & Market to catch the bus. I only had to wait a few minutes before the 48 arrived. I got on the bus at 9:01pm. I didn't have my 5 bus schedule with me, but I guessed that the next bus would be leaving Old City (5 minutes away) at 9:18pm. A few blocks away from where I would catch the 5 bus, I decided to get off the 48 and enjoy the weather by walking the rest of the way.

I was only a block away as I watched the 5 bus pull out and leave at 9:08pm. I guessed wrong.

I waited patiently for the next 5 bus, which didn't arrive until 9:38pm. I got on and at 9:42pm I was finally headed home. Tonight I wore a white coat, which I'm very aware of especially when riding Septa. I held the back of the coat up, scooted into the seat, and smashed my head on the overhead light. I sat down, closed my eyes and sighed.

We passed an accident on 3rd near Spring Garden. A girl crashed into the side of a white 4-door sedan. No one was hurt, they were both standing outside on their cellphones. I hate seeing accidents though. A few blocks later and we were on Girard. Under the El, the bus stopped to pick up some passengers. I thud caught my attention and I looked up in time to see a very intoxicated man lying face down next to the driver. Guess he didn't know you had to step UP onto the bus. He stayed on for 2 blocks.

I'm glad to be home. I really missed the rental.

What Happened?

On my walk to the El, I saw two large orange Septa trucks at my stop. When I turned the corner, I saw that the elevator was closed and the gate was shut, so I assumed the trucks were there for maintenance.

As I walked up the stairs, I got to the second landing and noticed caution tape. I took my phone out of my pocket to call my boss, I was afraid the el was shut down and that I'd be late for work.

Once upstairs, I saw this:

The gate was open, which is usually used for wheelchairs and strollers. I didn't have to pay my fare, though I was nervous that something terrible happened. I twittered a few news sites, but haven't heard anything. Google didn't pull any matches when I searched "Septa Berks El".

I'm growing old

I attended the best sleepover of my life on Saturday. It took everyone a while before we were able to meet up, but at 2:00pm on Saturday, we were all together.

My 20 year old cousin Kacie, my soon-to-be 15 year old cousin Brooke and our Aunt Debbie.

Our agenda: mani/pedi's, shopping, Bride Wars, foodfoodfood and Rock Band.

Best decision of my life was to allow Brooke to talk me into painting my nails with zebra stripes. Turned out to look more like tiger stripes, especially when compared to hers.

Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld; Kacie was on drums, Brooke was on guitar and I was singing. They thought I was making up the lyrics. We didn't get through the first time, we were too busy peeing ourselves from laughter.

At 4:11am, the lights were turned off. At 11:30am, we woke up; exhausted and starving. The candy, soda and snack food wasn't enough of a meal to keep us hungry. Dressed in green, we headed to The Coffee Station. I had a cheese steak omelette and I was brought back to life.

I can't wait to do it again.

Soda, soda pop or pop?

When I was 16, I worked the the 7-11 around the corner from my house. I decided to apply for a job instead of standing outside of the store with my friends. I drank Slurpees, ate cheeseburger hot dogs and learned how to mop using looped end floor mop.

My favorite part of working at 7-11 was stocking the vault, or fridge. It was super cold and I didn't have to deal with any customers. I could also steal Velveeta cheese slices, drink a lot of soda and pretend to be working hard. I don't remember having to restock the soda's though. How strange. Maybe because I was too busy gulping them down.

My favorite part about the holidays? Food and presents.

Now I can add friends to that very short list.

I threw my first non-birthday party last night. A few people canceled, some people never showed but the ones that did made my night wonderful.

I had been planning this party for a few weeks. I was at work and someone asked if I was getting a Christmas tree for my apartment. I thought about it and told them that I would be the only one enjoying it, unless I had people over. It dawned on me, like a light bulb that I should have people over. I should throw a party!

I took out paper, started writing names, sent out a mass text message asking for addresses so that I could send invites. I listed all the food I could prepare and I e-mailed my Mom to borrow her perfectly sized (fake) tree. Once I got home, I made an "official" Myspace event, that I would check everyday from that date on. Not in an obsessive way, but in an I-really-hope-every-single-person-says-yes-and-I-look-really-popular kind of way.

On Friday, December 12th I realized I had no food. Frantically, I called my Mom and asked to ~~steal~~ borrow her car. I woke up early Saturday and started working my way through a laundry list of Things to Do:

Drivers were incompetent, it was almost impressive. Customers were rude and cashiers didn't try to hide their hatred for their jobs. Shelves were messy and in some cases empty. Children were crying while their parents ignored them. Through all this, I fought because I... I had a list to conquer.

Mistletoe was on my list, had been for about a week and a half. I called a few places and between Walmart, Michael's and Kmart, I was left on hold for an hour and a half. So, I figured I'd have better luck going to the actual store and speaking with a sales associate and if worse came to worst, I would actually look on the shelves myself.

Every store. EVERY SINGLE STORE. I walked up to an employee and recited like a script, "Hi, how are you? Do you have mistletoe?"
Every time, the reply was a firm "No."
I started getting desperate, "Fake mistletoe? Something that resembles mistletoe?"
"No."

On my phone today, I received a picture message from my friend Ainsley in Utah, showing that she found mistletoe while standing in line at a local grocery store. I tried 3 grocery stores! Maybe Philadelphia doesn't believe in tradition.

By 5:00pm, the trunk of my ~~stolen~~ Mom's car was full and I was exhausted. I got a burger from a fast food place and ate it while crawling home, up Columbus Boulevard.

Once home, I chopped vegetables, thawed frozen spinach (which is a story in itself, there has to be an easier way than what I've been doing), rolled pigs in their blankets and started to decorate. The party started at 9:00pm, so I calculated that if I showered around 7:30 or 8:00pm, I would be dry and dressed before people arrived. That was until two of my good friends showed up around 8:00pm.

Someone forgot to tell them about the time change.

See, I had originally planned for the party to start at 7:00pm, but I changed it about a week and a half ago to start at 9:00pm.

Oops.

They were really great sports, and they went out to look for a place to get take out beer. I jumped in the shower, petrified at this point that more people were going to show up, thinking that the party was still at 7:00pm. Thankfully, that didn't happen.

Dry and dressed, I finished putting everything together.

People started to arrive, I started to get drunk and the food started to disappear. The night started with Home Alone, switched to Home Alone 2, then National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and the night ended around 3am after Elf.

I am so thankful for my friends who came and made my first non-birthday special. I am exhausted and broke and my feet are killing me, but it was worth it. Lessons learned? Be very clear with everyone about what time the party starts, invite more and expect less, take pictures of the guests, not just the food and lastly, have extra money saved up for a spa pedicure the next day.

I posted a similar entry over the summer, but now it's winter and I'm in love all over again.

I love the spirit in the air. I love when people tell me to have a nice holiday as we say goodbye. I love holiday commercials, especially the ones that remind me of being a kid. I love the cheeseburger combo at Cafe 59; steak fries, a cheeseburger, pickle and a drink for $5.25. I love watching snow fall. I love leaving the warmth of a building and seeing everything blanketed in snow. I love seeing people walking around the city with bags in both hands, filled with presents. I love snowflakes cut out of white sheets of paper. I love bokeh light pictures. I love that Market Street is decorated with lights and each tree is covered in ornaments. I love defrosting on the El on my way to work. I love taking a shower at night, shaving my legs, covering myself in lotion and going to sleep against cold sheets. I love sales. I love having money to spend at those sales. I love seeing old friends or coworkers and being genuinely happy to see them. I love the newest layout of my living room. I love coming home from work and finally feeling like I'm home. I love giant, traditional C7 Christmas lights like my Grandparents used to put up. I love turtleneck sweaters and being able to wear my scarves. I love walking into a warm room and having to catch my breath from the cold. I love my tube socks. I love gloves that go up to my elbows. I love shopping for shoes that are lined with fur. I love having a fake tree in my living room. I love that on Saturday, my apartment will be filled with people I love.

Last night, I popped some Butter Lover's popcorn and finished it off with some 100 calorie chocolate cookies. I haven't shaved my legs in weeks, I can't remember the last time I actually used a razor. I hate clipping my own toe nails, I'd rather pay $25 to have someone else do it. I watch the Biggest Loser and cry because I really miss having a gym routine and kicking my own ass. I think I'm a good person. I also think I'm pretty. I just don't want to fix the things that are keeping me single. I hate my vagina about 80% of the time. I own too much porn, but it's only "too much" because I don't watch it. Sometimes, I'll pee and I won't flush the toilet, I hate to waste the water. I can't do a handstand or a cartwheel. I know exactly how many people I've slept with, but I don't know all of their names. If I masturbate in the morning, I'm tired for the remainder of the day. I pick my nose. Sometimes I wipe boogies on the bottom of bus seats. I find things wrong with boys, so much so that I can't get myself to even consider liking them. My morning routine consists of me pooing, naked. Sometimes I won't do my dishes for weeks, I'll just keep adding more soap and fresh water. I just farted.

Creamy Spinach-Artichoke Mini Pizzas

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Serving: 10 pizzas

4 oz. cream cheese, softened
2 tablespoons sour cream
¾ cup frozen spinach, thawed, squeezed to drain
½ cup artichoke hearts, drained, patted dry with paper towels
1 box Pilsbury Garlic Breadsticks
1 oz (1/4 cup) shredded parmesan cheese

Heat oven to 350 degrees F. In medium bowl, mix cream cheese, sour cream, thawed spinach and artichoke hearts until well blended, breaking up artichokes during stirring.

Unroll dough into 1 large ractangle. Spread garlic mixture from box evenly over dough. Separate dough into 10 breadsticks, coiling dough into spiral shape with garlic mixture inside; place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet.

(I did not use the box of breadsticks. I used the pop open cans and it worked just fine.)

Starting at center press out each coil into 3 ½-inch round (edges will curl up slightly). Spoon and spread cream cheese mixture on top of each round. Sprinkle with cheese.

Bake at 350 degrees F for 17-22 minutes or until cheese is melted and edges are golden brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheet. Serve warm.

Note: To quickly thaw spinach, place in colander; rinse with cool water until thawed. Drain well; squeeze dry with paper towels.

16. If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics, what would you do? I'd make it nicer. Everyone is so rushed and aggressive and just, mean. No one takes the time to say Hello and ask how people are doing anymore. I'd also bring romance back. I fear that romance will die when our Grandparents are gone.

SEPTA has 525 engineers, conductors and assistant conductors to run its railroad.

Not one works a 40-hour week.

Because of a shortage of qualified workers, the complex nature of rush-hour scheduling, and SEPTA's desire to limit costs for employee benefits, all engineers and conductors work overtime every week, and are paid accordingly.

The typical engineer or conductor is paid for 67 hours a week. The typical engineer earned $85,450 in 2007, SEPTA records show. Forty-three made more than $100,000 last year, and the top-earning engineer made $140,917.

The typical conductor earned $70,766 last year, and the highest-paid conductor made $133,179.

I moved into my apartment in December of 2007. I dedicated a few months to getting my place together, painting the walls, adding furniture and making it feel like home. I wasn't taking photographs and wasn't feeling inspired to pick up my camera to change that. I eventually decided to splurge on a new camera and that definitely gave me the boost I needed.

I wandered around Center City and took photographs of various places and things, but I wanted something more. So, I started a project. It was simple.

Follow the demolition of the hideous, abandoned building across the street from my apartment.

Demolition lasted a few weeks, maybe not even that. One weekend morning, my Mom was headed over to pick me up... and my 4 loads of laundry. I got a phone call from her, asking why my street was blocked off, asking if I was okay. I was completely oblivious to what was going on outside.

Rumor has it that one of the workers was using the backhoe and dug too deep. Rumor has it that the worker had a beer in his hand while working. With one mistake, the foundation was compromised and the house that was standing next to the one being demoed, collapsed.

The house on the right was just built. I wonder, what would have happened to the crumbled home had that new house not been there.

September 13, 2008 - Fire officials were on the scene of an apartment that collapsed Saturday afternoon.
The front of the 3-story apartment collapsed at around noon on Frankford Avenue in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia.
Authorities tell Action News, four of the units were occupied and more than half a dozen residents are displaced.
A construction company was demolishing the unoccupied part of the apartment building, however, the occupied section starting crumbling, too.

Police Officer Isabel Nazario was killed when her patrol car was struck by a large sports utility vehicle being operated by an intoxicated male.

Officer Nazario was on patrol when she and her partner learned of a vehicle pursuit in progress. Officers were pursing a Cadillac Escalade being operated by an intoxicated, unlicensed 16-year-old. As Officer Nazario and her partner headed south on 39th Street , the Escalade, traveling east on Wallace Street, broadsided their cruiser near the passenger door. Officer Nazario was killed instantly. Her partner was critically injured in the collision. Both Officers were removed from the patrol car with the jaws of life.

The driver of the Escalade was captured after a foot chase by other responding officers.

Police Officer Nazario had served with the Philadelphia Police Department for 18 years and was assigned to the Narcotics Strike Force and detailed to the 16th Police District in West Philadelphia. She is survived by her daughter, fiancee, mother, and a sister.

Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital

I visited Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital.

Not for treatment, but to take photographs. A friend told me about an abandoned loony bin, so we set a day and went on an adventure. After a nice drive, we found the area where we thought the hospital was located. We spotted an old map and followed it's directions until finally, we were there.

We had read about an underground tunnel, but we decided not to go inside. Personally, I was perfectly content with looking through the windows. That felt eerie enough.

After coming home and uploading my photographs, I received quite a few messages about my shots. Mark from Weird NJ had contacted me, inquiring about using some of the photographs on Weird NJ's website and publishing some in their magazine. Also, a very talented photographer named Christina Tullo contacted me and told me some of her Greystone stories.

I'm not necessarily ready to join the world of urban exploration, but I really enjoyed this shoot. That was, until we had to have our pictures taken and were forced to leave the grounds by police officers.

One of the more infamous asylums in New Jersey lore is Greystone Psychiatric Park, located in Morris Plains. First conceived in1871 and known as The New Jersey State Lunatic Asylum at Morristown, the institution first opened its doors (to a mere 292 patients) on August 17, 1876.

In its day, Greystone was a landmark in progressivism. Designed by Thomas Kirkbride, the hospital advocated uncrowded conditions, fresh air, and the notion that mental patients were curable people.

One of the more famous aspects of Greystone is its notorious network of underground tunnels and rails. This system led to Greystone being built on one huge foundation --it was actually the largest continuous foundation in the United States until the Pentagon was constructed. Being that the hospital sits on over 670 acres of land, this rail system served to unite the entire complex as one contained unit.
